ASA 118 Docking

This course helps prepare you for safely and efficiently docking an auxiliary powered sailboat. You will gain knowledge of basic auxiliary power theory, engine and steering controls, prop wash and prop walk, proper use of dock lines, effect of wind and current, and crew communication and safety.

The goal is for you to become more comfortable with close quarters maneuvering and docking in various slip configurations.   Boats of different sizes and with different equipment, i.e. saildrive versus shaft drive, bowthruster, throttle and transmission controls, will have very different handling characteristics.  This course is taught over two days on board a 30' keelboat with shaft drive, right-handed propeller, and separate throttle and gear shift controls.  The course may optionally be taught on a student's own boat if preferred.

PREREQUISITES:

• Experience with driving an auxiliary powered sailboat with a wheel helm
• No specific ASA certifications are required
• Ability to move around the vessel and handle dock lines

• ANSA Membership – Membership in ANSA is required to take a class with ANSA. Join ANSA

TEXTS AND MATERIALS:

• ASA is working on a new Docking textbook which may be available soon.  The current textbook by Tom Tursi is also available: - Current Docking Textbook
• Textbook is required, student purchase individually in advance 

PREPARATION:

Review of docking textbook (current book or new once it's available), use of any online videos available, practice knots including cleat hitch, round turn with two half-hitches, bowline.  A written exam is required.

COURSE FEE:  $315

The course fees may be adjusted if a student's boat is used or if a private sail is arranged. 

Fee includes required ASA written exam and ASA certification.
