ASA 104
Bareboat Cruising

This course helps prepare you with first-hand, on board experiences useful for chartering a large, 30-45’, monohull sailing vessel.   The schedule will be three consecutive days with 2 nights, one at anchor and one at a destination port, weather and circumstances permitting.

The goal is for you to be able to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions. The course discusses knowledge of provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance procedures, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, multiple-anchor mooring, docking, health & safety, emergency operations, and weather interpretation.  The course is taught on board and you will rotate between the duties and responsibilities of skipper, lookout, navigator, and crew.

Students will coordinate to provision for the sail.

PREREQUISITES:

• ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing
• ASA 103, Basic Coastal Cruising
• Ability to demonstrate competencies in all knowledge and skills elements of the above two ASA standards.
• ASA recommends a minimum of 80 sailing hours before undertaking ASA 104, in addition to previous class time.

• ANSA Membership – Membership in ANSA is required to take a class with ANSA. Join ANSA

TEXTS AND MATERIALS:

• ASA Bareboat Cruising Made Easy - Required text, student purchase individually in advance or ANSA provides a loaner book
• Chart 12270 - one chart will be available to the class, however students may purchase their own as well. 
• Have or borrow adequate navigation instruments
• Have or borrow a hand-bearing compass

PREPARATION:

The boat serves as the training platform; there are no separate classroom lectures.  To make this possible you are expected to read the textbook, study independently, practice knots, etc. prior to the class.  Students will share in the provisioning for the 3-day course and in meal preparation.  We will provide instructions and contacts for coordinating ahead of time.

The course fees will be dependent on what boat is used (club, members, chartered, or students boat), whether it is a private sail, and the final course scheduled dates.

Guests are also invited to take the course or just enjoy the sailing adventure.

Fee includes required ASA exam and ASA certification.
