The Annapolis Naval Sailing Association Foundation Inc. was approved by the IRS for 501(c)3 tax exempt status in June 2013. The Foundation is dedicated to preserving nautical skills, naval history, and the Chesapeake Bay environment by funding education, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) students, real-life sailing experiences, and marine environmental research. The Foundation has provided the Annapolis Naval Sailing Association (ANSA) with training scholarships.
The Foundation provided grants in past years to the Ocean Research Project, which is dedicated to ocean sustainability through a Bay-wide bio-telemetry survey, a survey of the trans-Pacific plastic pollution, and a survey of the North Atlantic Sargasso Sea. Grants have also been given to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, the National Sailing Hall of Fame specifically to support the STEM program, the Chesapeake Regional Accessible Boating (CRAB), the US Naval Academy Museum, the Historic Ships in Baltimore, and the National Museum of the US Navy at the Navy Yard in Washington DC. Several Board members are actively working to support sailing activities by the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and the Sea Scouts.
Members of the Foundation’s Board, all of whom are current or previous ANSA members, are all volunteers and take no compensation for their efforts.
